Roosevelt Elementary School Celebrates Quarter Two Academic Excellence with Honor Roll Ceremony
Roosevelt Elementary School proudly recognized the outstanding academic achievements for quarter two of its 5th and 6th-grade students during a special Honor Roll ceremony. "We are incredibly proud of our students' dedication and commitment to their studies," said Dr. Septor, Principal. "This Honor Roll celebration is a testament to their hard work and the support they receive from our dedicated teachers and families. We are grateful to The Coffee Box for their generous donation, which made this event even more special," added Mrs. Hennessy, Vice Principal.

Roosevelt Elementary 5th Grade Students "Round Up" History's Hidden Heroes: Female Scientists Take Center Stage in Wild West Wanted Posters
This March, in celebration of Women's History Month, Roosevelt Elementary School students have taken a creative and empowering approach to learning about the vital contributions of female scientists. Ditching the traditional textbook format, students have designed "Wanted" posters, transforming historical figures into celebrated heroes of the scientific world.
Recognizing the persistent stereotype of scientists as "old men with crazy hair," Dr. Dawkins challenged her students to flip the script. Instead of criminals, the "wanted" subjects were groundbreaking women whose discoveries have shaped our world.
"We wanted our students to not only learn about these incredible women but to truly engage with their stories," said Dr. Dawkins, 5th grade science and social studies teacher at Roosevelt Elementary. "By framing it as a fun, Wild West-themed 'wanted' poster project, we saw our students' creativity and passion for learning soar."
Students were given the freedom to choose their female scientist and present their findings in a variety of digital formats, including Canva, Google Slides, and Google Docs. Each poster featured a "wanted" scientist, highlighting her significant contributions to society. They also included "Works Cited" sections with clickable links to their research sources, demonstrating their commitment to accuracy and thoroughness.
The project aimed to:
- Challenge Stereotypes: Break down the misconception that science is a male-dominated field.
- Highlight Unsung Heroes: Bring attention to the often-overlooked achievements of female scientists.
- Promote Research and Presentation Skills: Encourage students to conduct research and present their findings in a creative and engaging way.
- Celebrate Women's History Month: Provide a meaningful and interactive way to honor the contributions of women throughout history.
This project served as an internal educational initiative, empowering students to explore and celebrate the contributions of female scientists. The resulting digital posters will be utilized for further classroom discussions and learning activities, fostering a deeper understanding of women's vital role in scientific history.
